Mr. Clay Naughton RSS
Welcome to Highland Middle School!  My name is Clay Naughton; I am proud to be the principal here at HMS.  The 2016-17 school year is my seventh year serving in the position of principal.  I am currently in my 19th year in the Highland School District, my 13th year as an administrator.  Prior to becoming an administrator, I taught science, technology, and social studies classes.  Between my time in the classroom and assuming the principalship at Highland Middle School, I served as the assistant principal and athletic director at Highland High School.  I consider it an honor and privilege to work with the outstanding young men and women at Highland Middle School on a daily basis.

Our District motto is "We Build Excellence".  While there are various ways we strive to accomplish this, the bottom line is we strive to make sure our students get smarter each day!  I know that is a simple way of saying it, but getting directly to the point, that is what it is all about.  While discussing building excellence, I want to focus on the "building" part.  Excellence and is truly built, it doesn't just happen.  As we have moved into an era in education of increased accountably and a significant increase in rigor, struggle is becoming more and more common in all students.  I would like to encourage all parents to embrace the struggle; to encourage your child(ren) to persevere.  I am a parent too, and I know it can be very hard to watch your child struggle, but by teaching perseverance, we are truing "building" excellence and preparing our children for life-long success.

A personal goal of mine is that every kid has a great overall educational experience.  This goal is more more likely to be achieved with parents and school work cooperatively for the benefit of the child.  We may not always agree on the approach, but our goal of achieving that outstanding experience is the same.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.  I am looking forward to an outstanding 2016-17 school year.

Clay Naughton
Principal
Highland Middle School
